Big news for the Marquette Golden Eagles today, as Ohio State transfer DJ Carton has been granted his waiver from the NCAA and will be immediately eligible to play this season.

Carton needed the waiver to avoid a year-in-residence usually served by men’s basketball student-athlete’s after transferring before receiving an undergraduate degree. The 6’2 guard from Bettendorf, Iowa averaged 10.4 points per game in just 23.9 minutes across 20 games last season in Columbus while shooting 40% from three-point range.
Carton didn’t play after January 26th last season, at first taking some time away “to deal with personal matters” according to a school announcement. Carton later followed up and blamed his mental health for the absence, which extended until Covid-19 wiped out the rest of the college basketball season.
Carton will have three years of eligibility for Steve Wojciechowski and Marquette, who finished 18-12 overall and 8-10 in the Big East last season with the nation’s leading scorer Markus Howard adding 27.8 points per game. Howard is off to professional basketball, and Carton can step in right away and add some needed value offensively.
