Nets title odds sink without Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant

Brooklyn won’t be able to count on Kyrie Irving or Kevin Durant if it makes the postseason, and its title odds have dropped ahead of the return of the NBA on July 31.

The NBA has finalized a 22-team field that is set to continue playing this season after the COVID-19 pandemic brought the season to a halt. The season will resume in late July, and the Brooklyn Nets are ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 30-34 record. They haven’t secured a playoff berth just yet, as they are just 12 a game ahead of the Orlando Magic and six games ahead of the Washington Wizards. If they don’t finish strong, they could find themselves in a play-in series ahead of the postseason.

Kyrie Irving played sparingly this season and was hindered by multiple injuries. He appeared in 20 games before undergoing shoulder surgery in March. While there was speculation that he could return after getting an extended rest period, both he and Kevin Durant — who intended to sit out the 2019-20 to rehab his torn Achilles — have come out to say they will not play this season.

Brooklyn still has a promising young core that features Caris LeVert, Spencer Dinwiddie, but the lack of a go-to star doesn’t bode well for its title chances, and its championship odds have dropped in the last month because of that.

Brooklyn’s title odds were at +6600 on DraftKings SportsBook on May 13 but that mark has dropped to +8000.
