The U.S. Open tennis tournament date has officially been settled. New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced the tournament will start on August 31st with no fans in attendance, per Jesse McKinley.
The tournament was up in the air due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with other events around it rescheduled. However, Cuomo and his health officials would seem to think the situation has reached a point where a traditional late August tournament can work without fans.
This year’s Wimbledon tournament was canceled while the French Open was rescheduled to start September 20th. There are numerous smaller tune-up tournaments to be sorted out in the meantime.
Currently, Ashleigh Barty is No. 1 in the WTA Tour rankings, followed by Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Sofia Kenin, and Elina Svitolina. Bianca Andreescu is the defending U.S. Open women’s champion. Novak Djokovic tops the ATP Tour rankings, followed by Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev. Nadal is the defending U.S. Open men’s champion.
