My Favorite Bets
No. 5: POR Trail Blazers (+8000): Although it will be a tough road for them to even make the playoffs, +8000 is great value for the 2019 Western Conference runners-up. After an injury filled regular season, the time off benefits the Trail Blazers, who expect to have big men Zach Collins and Jusuf Nurkic healthy. Is it realistic to think that the Trail Blazers will get past the first round let alone win the conference? No, but having Damian Lillard on your side for a $1.00 bet that nets $80.00 sounds like fun to me.
No. 4: OKC Thunder (+4000): This is not a movie, so I do not expect the feel good story of the Oklahoma City Thunder having a great year during a “rebuilding season” to end in a conference title, but I trust them as much as any mid-tier Western Conference playoff team. Point guard Chris Paul played a big role in determining this return to play format as President of the National Basketball Players Association, so he should be as motivated as any player to perform well at Disney World.
No. 3: HOU Rockets (+700): Finally, a team that I can actually imagine hoisting the Western Conference trophy in front of an empty arena this fall. The Rockets are a flawed team, but their blueprint for a conference title is simple: James Harden and Russell Westbrook go berserk for 2.5 months. The issue is that the next two teams on this list also have great players, so Harden and Westbrook outplaying them four out of seven games will be a very difficult task.
No. 2: LA Lakers (+160)/No. 1: LA Clippers (+180): I have changed my mind a million times between the Lakers and Clippers as the best team in the West since Anthony Davis teamed up with LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard joined forces with Paul George last July. The Clippers have slightly longer odds, so I have decided to go with them as the better value bet. Both teams are great, and a Western Conference Finals between them could be one for the ages. It is unfortunate that the first ever “Battle for Los Angeles” playoff series would not happen in Los Angeles, but that benefits the Clippers, who do not have to risk playing a “home game” surrounded by fans wearing purple and gold. The Clippers have not made an NBA Finals, or even a conference finals, in the franchise’s 50 years of existence, so a bet on them makes you part of history.
