MLB tells teams to find site for taxi squads within 100 miles of home stadium

Major League Baseball players and club owners continue negotiations in attempts to get the 2020 season started. The owners seem content to wait things out and play a 50-game season. There is talk of a longer season, but negotiations are at nearly a standstill with the owners not showing movement in this process.

Odds are decent we get a 50-game season given the nature of the March agreement between owners and players. Regardless of season length, the minor league season has been all but shut down at this point. Although most prospects will not be able to play this year, MLB plans on having an option for each team to develop a taxi squad.

A taxi squad is a group of players available to play if injuries happen to the big league squad. MLB has told all 30 teams to find a location for taxi squad workouts within 100 miles of their home stadium, according to Baseball America’s J.J. Cooper.

A quick restart with an abbreviated spring training leaves open the possibility for injuries. Pitchers might not be fully stretched out, and batters might more easily strain muscles while hitting, running or fielding. A taxi squad will provide depth in case of such injuries.
