Breaking down updated NBA Rookie of the Year odds during the break

The long break has affected Zion Williamson’s odds to catch Ja Morant in the worst way.

The NBA’s Rookie of the Year race has been the top two picks from the 2019 draft all season long, and that hasn’t changed since the league halted operations in early March. Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant has long been the front runner, but New Orleans Pelicans phenom Zion Williamson was able to close the gap after making his professional debut in January. A lot has changed in the last three months though. Here’s what the updated odds look like on DraftKings Sportsbook.

2020 NBA ROY Odds June Update

Player Odds on 3/9 Current Odds
Player Odds on 3/9 Current Odds
Ja Morant -715 -10000
Zion Williamson +350 +1400

If there were more than eight regular-season games left to play when the season resumes in late July, Williamson would have a better chance at catching Morant. But the abbreviated year has helped the Memphis guard tremendously. Williamson would have to go on a ridiculous tear and be the driving force behind New Orleans beating out the Trail Blazers and Grizzlies for a playoff spot in order to overcomer these insurmountable odds. I don’t see that happening when it’s been so long since either player has touched the hardwood. Morant retaining his significant lead is the most likely outcome.
