They are separated by about 90 minutes across the north of Italy, but the rivalry between Juventus and AC Milan dominates a nation when speaking about football. The Serie A and European giants compete for both spotlight, stars, and at least for Il Rossoneri (Milan’s nickname), the chic factor in one of the fashion capitals of the world.
In domestic play, The Old Lady (yup, that’s what they call Juve) are one point clear of Lazio atop the table entering Round 27 of 38, looking for their 36th scudetto (the championship, or ‘little shield’). They have what some consider still the best player on the planet in Cristiano Ronaldo, younger superstars in Argentinians Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuaín, and they’ve scored 50 times this season while conceding only 24.
Milan has been relegated to spoiler this season in Serie Awith the club sitting in seventh place, three points adrift Napoli for the sixth and final spot to play in next season’s Europa League. But they can still win a trophy by advancing in this cup competition. They’re actually underwater on goal difference in the league (28 scored, 34 allowed), but might be a bit unlucky with an expected goals of +1.2.
While adding Zlatan Ibrahimović in the January transfer window has helped, a side of mostly developing younger players such as Theo Hernández and Franck Kessié hasn’t found the mark yet. To be sure, they will be active this summer in signings.
