UFC 249 is set to go down Saturday evening, May 9th on ESPN+. The opening early preliminary fight starts at 6:30 p.m., the main preliminaries get going at 8 p.m., and the main card gets underway at 10 p.m.
The biggest heavyweight bout on the card will pit Cameroonian Francis Ngannou against undefeated Jairzinho Rozenstruik. Ngannou has won his last three fights all by first-round knockout. He’s a striker with elite power, and has yet to be knocked out himself in the octagon.
Rozenstruik is undefeated at 10-0, and a converted kickboxer who had a record of 76-6 with 64 knockouts. His last fight against Alistair Overeem had him behind on all four scorecards, but he knocked out Overeem with just four seconds remaining to secure the victory.
Despite Rozenstruik’s undefeated record, the betting public is backing Ngannou at a pretty significant price. By the odds, his -278 price converts to the money having him win 70.5% of the time. A majority of bettors also have him winning by knockout, TKO, or disqualification. And not surprising in a battle of fighters that don’t spend a lot of time on the mat, less than 1% of the dollars are on Rozenstruik winning by submission. But if it did happen, the healthy payout of +2800 would be a nice win for the backers.
