Could Tommy Stevens could be a late round steal for the Saints?

Tommy Stevens was selected by the New Orleans Saints with the 240th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He’s joining one of the deeper quarterback rooms in the NFL, but can hw carve out a role for himself? Stevens threw for 1,155 yards and 11 scores in his lone season with Mississippi State last year after spending four seasons at Penn State before that. He opened the 2019 season as the starter, lost the job to Garrett Shrader, and eventually re-took it.

Scouting Report

Stevens is an interesting quarterback prospect. He’s athletic with a 6’5” frame and has the potential to be used as a utility player. He lined up at tight end, running back, and wide receiver in Penn State’s two quarterback system. That versatility could give him valuable fantasy upside. But he’s also started just nine games in five years of college football.

Fantasy football impact

Sean Payton poached Stevens after he heard the signal caller had agreed to sign as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers. The Saints have re-signed Drew Brees, tendered Taysom Hill, and signed Jameis Winston this offseason. There’s almost no chance Stevens will have any impact with this group, but Payton likes something about him. He seems like a practice squad candidate, but that requires clearing waivers, so maybe he gets a shot with another team.
