UPDATE 9:20 pm: Mackenzie Dern wins by submission (kneebar) at 2:36 of the first round. There was a lot of wild punching early, but Cifers left her leg undefended when she was standing on the ground. It was over immediately, and was the first women’s leg submission in UFC history.
The only women’s fight on tonight’s main card for UFC on ESPN 9 is a women’s strawweight bout between Mackenzie Dern and Hannah Cifers. Both fighters lost their last outing, as Dern dropped a unanimous decision to Amanda Ribas at UFC Fight Night 161 in October, Cifers was knocked out by Angela Hill at UFC Fight Night 166 this past January.
Dern is 7-1 and has won four of her fights by way of submission and three by way of decision. Though she’s had trouble making weight at 115 lbs before, once missing by a whopping seven pounds, she came in fine at the weigh-in yesterday.
“Shockwave” Cifers is 10-4 with five wins by way of KO or TKO and five wins by decision. Her four losses include two KO/TKO defeats, one submission, and one decision. She lands 4.91 significant strikes per minute, while absorbing 6.59 across her three UFC fights.
Dern comes in as a huge favorite due to her experience and better resume. The lone loss in her 7-1 career is to an outstanding fighter in fellow Brazilian Amanda Ribas, and when she’s in shape she’s very difficult to beat. This all adds up to making Dern the biggest favorite on tonight’s card.
