Looking at updated Stanley Cup odds for 2019-20

The NHL announced its plan for a return on Tuesday, effectively ending the regular season. The League has opted for a 24-team playoff format in which there is a qualifying round consisting of eight non-playoff teams who will compete for a spot in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

I say “non-playoff teams” because it’s the eight teams immediately out of the playoff picture. The NHL has given these teams an opportunity to compete for the Cup, something that has never happened before. The top four teams in each conference will be seeded 1-4. After that, it’s a best-of-5 qualifying round between teams seeded 5-12 in each conference. That will include those eight non-playoff teams fighting for a chance at the Cup.
