Cuomo: New York pro sports teams can begin training camps immediately

The governor of New York announced on Sunday that pro sports teams can begin training for the coming season if they follow appropriate Covid-19 health and safety protocols.

New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Sunday that effective immediately, pro sports teams based in the state of New York can begin training camps. They will need to follow appropriate local and state health and safety protocols, but they can begin training.

To be clear right off the bat, this does not impact the New York Giants or New York Jets, as they are based in New Jersey. However, New Jersey could very well follow New York’s lead sooner than later.

The most notable teams this impacts include the Bills, Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Islanders, Liberty, Nets, Knicks, Red Bulls and New York City FC. Different teams are looking at different restart plans, so not all are impacted the same way. Here’s a look at what it means for each of the notable teams, based in part on where their leagues currently stand.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills are in their offseason workout program, but have been allowed to re-open their offices to small numbers of front office personnel. However, coaches and players are not yet allowed back at any NFL facilities. The players in particular require the owners reach an agreement with the union to restart in-person activities.

New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets

The NBA is looking at restarting the season in Orlando at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, projecting some time in late July. The league is reportedly set to call players back to local workout facilities at the start of June, so this re-opening by the governor would allow for players to come back to the New York metropolitan area for practices before potentially heading to Orlando.

New York Liberty

The WNBA is working on a plan to start the season, but there is no word yet on where things stand between the owners and players.

New York Rangers, New York Islanders

The NHL is looking at hosting a 24-team playoff in somewhere between two and four cities. It’s not clear yet if players would return to their local spot or go straight to the neutral locations.

New York Yankees, New York Mets

MLB owners are pushing for a restart in early July, with spraining training restarting in mid-June. It seems likely that spring training would be in the local cities, rather than in Florida and Arizona, but that has not been finalized. Owners and players have been negotiating health and safety issues, and owners are expected to make their economics proposal this coming Tuesday.

New York Red Bulls, New York City FC

MLS is looking to run a full league, 26-team playoff in Orlando. There is no word yet if teams would start training in Orlando, or if they would start in their local city first.
