Report: Seahawks don’t believe Rashaad Penny will be ready Week 1, talk to Freeman, Hyde

Rashaad Penny tore his ACL late last season and appears destined to miss the start of the season. Seattle will look to replace him with Devonta Freeman or Carlos Hyde if they can work out a contract.

The Seattle Seahawks want to run the ball, but have had injury trouble in their running back room with Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny going down late last season. Reports on Carson’s health have been positive, but news on Penny isn’t looking as good. In a recent Fantasy Points podcast, Adam Caplan reported that the team doesn’t believe Penny will be ready for Week 1 after his late 2019 ACL injury.

That has the Seahawks in the market to sign Devonta Freeman or Carlos Hyde. Caplan is reporting the Seahawks have made an offer to Freeman and the running back is asking for more than they’re offering. Meanwhile, Mike Silver is reporting the Seahawks have had conversations with Hyde.

Freeman and Hyde have both lasted late into free agency, but both have had interest from the Eagles and now the Seahawks. Seattle also has rookie Deejay Dallas, so if Freeman or Hyde were to land in Seattle, Dallas would lose fantasy value while Carson should remain the lead back while Freeman takes the Penny role.

We haven’t heard any details on how long Penny might be out, but these rumors are a bad sign for him in the first half of the 2020 season. As long as Carson is truly back, he’ll be the running back to roster in fantasy, but Freeman or Hyde and Dallas could have value, as Seattle is a good team for fantasy running backs.
