We did not get the normal Kentucky Derby to kick off May, but we got some fun horse racing nonetheless. The real Kentucky Derby has been rescheduled for September 5th, and in its place, a virtual race was organized at Churchill Downs featuring the 13 Triple Crown Champions.
The race took place at 5:45 p.m. ET on NBC, and Secretariat came through with the victory. It was not the kind of dominant victory Secretariat was known for in closing out the Triple Crown. The horse won this one having to come from being fifth back for much of the race, and finished just ahead of Citation and then Seattle Slew.
Seattle Slew and Count Fleet led for most of the race, while Secretariat and Citation hung back until the home stretch. Secretariat won by what looked like approximately half a length. Secretariat entered the race a 7-2 favorite followed by Citation at 4-1 and Seattle Slew and Affirmed at 5-1.
