Trainer Bob Baffert Looks Over Justify at Belmont Race Track

Normally the first Saturday in May is for the Run for The Roses, but this year the Kentucky Derby has been pushed back until September 5th. But you can still enjoy some horse racing today as Churchill Downs will present the Kentucky Derby Triple Crown Showdown today at 5:45 p.m. on NBC, a virtual race pitting the 13 winners of the Triple Crown against each other on America’s most famous track.

The idea was hatched in the need to replace the most exciting two minutes in sports with some programming, and has taken each winner of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes and put them in a field against each other. The post positions were assigned by random draw, but the odds were created by Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia.

Whatever the weather conditions are in Louisville today, we do know the conditions at the virtual Churchill Downs today, and it’s going to be a perfect day for racing.

The Triple Crown Showdown is to be contested at a virtual Churchill Downs at the Derby distance of 1¼ miles. Affirmed, the 1978 Triple Crown winner, was assigned the No.1 post position by random draw; Secretariat No. 3; Citation No. 8. Brooks Pierce, president and chief operating officer of Inspired Entertainment, said track officials were shown three versions of the race depicting different weather conditions and chose to stage the simulated race in bright sunshine instead of the slop that has recently prevailed on the first Saturday in May.

While Secretariat holds the fastest time ever run in all three of the Triple Crown races, that means a lot less when you’re in the most competitive field in history. There’s no track bias from the three-hole at Churchill, and the speed of the field will be able to keep Big Red in their sights better than any other he faced in reality. But 7-2 seems to be a good price on what should be the strongest horse.

Here is the field for today’s Virtual Kentucky Derby. Legendary jockey Eddie Arcaro is listed twice, as he will be digitally riding both mounts he took to the Triple Crown.
