MLS cancels All Star Game, Leagues Cup, Campeones Cup, proposes 26-team tournament

Major League Soccer announced on Tuesday it is canceling the 2020 All Star Game, Leagues Cup, and Campeones Cup due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The All Star Game was scheduled for July 29th in Los Angeles, the Leagues Cup was scheduled for a to be determined date between July and September, and the Campeones Cup was scheduled for August 12th in Seattle.

The league canceled the games in order to free up more dates on the calendar for more MLS competition. The league opened play on February 29th and then suspended play after each team had played two games. There is no word yet on a return to competition, let alone full return to practice.

There had been hopes of having teams back practicing by May 9th, but that has been delayed with numerous states maintaining stay-at-home orders and limiting the operations of nonessential businesses. A week ago, the league proposed a plan for all 26 teams to go to Orlando for a mini-tournament featuring a group stage and then a knockout tournament. The plan would have players arrive June 1st and start playing matches at the beginning of July.
