Kevin Volland and Lars Bender out for Bayer Leverkusen vs. Monchengladbach

Two starters for Leverkusen that were injured in Europa League play still aren’t set to return. We break down the news surrounding Kevin Volland and Lars Bender, and their potential replacements.

Bayer Leverkusen will be without two of their stars when they face off against Monchengladbach on Saturday as Kevin Volland and Lars Bender will not play. Both were injured during the cup tie with FC Porto in the first knockout round of the Europa League.

Volland suffered his injury in Germany, while Bender suffered his in Portugal. Volland’s injury is described as a syndesmotic ligament tear, while Bender looks to heal a foot injury.

Last week Kai Havertz replaced Volland in the #9 slot, and scored twice in the 4-1 victory over Werder Bremen. Kerem Demirbay and Mitchell Weiser also tallied for Die Werkself in the restart.

If the offense needs more push, look for Argentinian Lucas Alario to come on as one of the five available subs. He’s scored six goals in just 919 minutes of Bundesliga action this season, and leads the team in expected goals per 90 minutes ahead of even Volland. He came on in the 85th minute against Bremen.
