Borussia Dortmund is extremely shorthanded in their return to Bundesliga action on Saturday. Striker Jadon Sancho and attacking midfielder Gio Reyna are both sidelined due to injuries. Erling Haaland is starting in place of Sancho and Thorgan Hazard is starting in place of Reyna in the derby against FC Schalke.
Sancho was already questionable for the game due to a calf injury that appears to have happened in the quick training camp leading up to the Bundesliga restart. Dortmund’s official account tweeted that Reyna’s injury happened during warmups.
This is something all leagues will have to deal with in their rush to return to action. Players have been able to do work on their own, but social distancing has prevented them from in-person workouts with team trainers, and also left them stuck with whatever equipment and options they could find at home or nearby. In considering what this means for other leagues, medical staff will surely be paying close attention to injuries and conditioning.
