Breaking down early Giants point spreads

The NFL released the 2020 schedule and the New York Giants will look to build on Daniel Jones’ debut season when host the Steelers in a Monday Night Football opener. The Giants are currently +800 to win the division, third behind the Cowboys and Eagles. New York’s preseason win total is installed at 6.5 with the at +100 and the under at -121.

DraftKings Sportsbook posted all the Week 1 point spreads the evening of the schedule release, and they have since added nearly 100 additional games throughout the season. DK does big business in New Jersey and Colorado, and so we get an almost full list of Giants lines for the season. The only game that does not have a line is the Week 17 home finale against Dallas.

Most likely cover

Can Daniel Jones curb his turnovers in year two and run the Giants more consistently? He’ll have to if they want to win more than four games this season. They are only favored in two games though, which probably means they have a decent chance of winning a few games in which they are underdogs. Washington is likely the worst team they will face at home, with a Week 6 game in which they are favored by four points. The Giants beat them twice last season by 21 points at home and by six points on the road. The Giants upped their offensive line this offseason and should have the upper hand again against their division rivals.

Most likely fail to cover

The Giants overall should have a better team this season than last, as they’ve upgraded their defense and their offensive line, but they’ll still need to bring everything together under Jones. That will be toughest against strong defensive lines like the 49ers, who they face in Week 3. With a shortened offseason, the 49ers stand to be one of the best prepared teams early in the season while the Giants new offensive line still will need time to gel. I like the 49ers at -5.5 favorites.

Line most likely to change

The Arizona Cardinals are slight underdogs for their Week 14 tilt on the road against the Giants. Both teams have young quarterbacks coming off very few wins their rookie season. But, both teams have gotten better in the offseason. I like Kyler Murray to make a big leap this season, which could put them into the favorites column by Week 14.
