Tracking point totals for NHL standings

With the League on break, we take a look at NHL point totals and where each team stands with the season in question.

The NHL — along with the entire sports world — has currently been paused due to the coronavirus pandemic. The League has been on break for almost a month now and it’s unclear when play will resume this season. If/When the NHL decides to return, it’s also unclear if they’ll play out the rest of the regular season or roll right into the playoffs. This could impact preseason point and win totals betting on DraftKings Sportsbook. With that said, we’re going to take a look at where each team stands in the points race and evaluate things going forward.

It’s a tough table to look at if you decided to bet on the Oilers and Flyers to hit their point total overs during the preseason. Both teams sit at 98% of the way there, both just 1.5 points away from the OVER. The Flyers had been the hottest team in hockey before the NHL had to stop play. The Oilers were on track to reach the postseason for just the second time since 2006.

Outside of those two, there are a handful of other surprising teams close to reaching their mark. The Blue Jackets are at 81 points and are only 6 away from reaching the OVER. Somehow the Senators are at 62 points and closing in on their 67.5 despite sitting well out of the playoff picture. The Rangers, Canucks, Coyotes and Islanders are among other teams who were exceeding expectations this season.

On the losing side, the Red Wings and Sharks are two teams already incapable of hitting the OVER total. The Devils were closing in fast on an L in the midst of a miserable season. New Jersey had stepped it up a bit since firing coach John Hynes, playing around .500 hockey. If the regular season returns, it’ll be almost impossible for them not to hit the UNDER, just 4 lost points off. Among other playoff teams struggling to hit their total, the Maple Leafs, Lightning, Predators and Hurricanes have underperformed relative to their preseason win/point totals.
