German football officials are hopeful the Bundesliga season will be restarted on May 16th. We take a look at some of the key clubs in the chase for the championship, places in European competitions for next season, and those fighting to avoid relegation.
Borussia Mönchengladbach is the fifth-largest club in Germany by membership. “The Prussians” have over 75,000 supporters on the books, and won two UEFA Cups and five Bundesliga’s in the 1970’s.
But unfortunately those are also the latest trophies on display in North Rhine-Westphalia. It’s been a long time since The Foals have tasted glory. Can they navigate a slim path to the top of the table with nine matches remaining this season? It seems unlikely, but there’s a good chance they can return to the Champions League for the first time in four seasons with a top-four finish.

As the season returns
The schedule sets up well for Mönchengladbach to make a run, as five of the nine matches they have remaining are against the bottom half of the table. They also head to Allianz Arena for a bout with Bayern and the chance to make up points. But the punters don’t believe there’s a way forward, as Mönchengladbach are +10000 to win the title.
They’ve scored 49 goals this season in 25 domestic matches and only allowed 30, but that’s generally not the level of firepower needed to compete for trophies in a UEFA Big Five league. But they tackle as effectively as any team in Germany, and have an outstanding goalkeeper in captain Yann Sommer.
For American fans this is the home of USMNT member Fabian Johnson, though he has only six appearances for the club this season.
