NC governor: Coca-Cola 600 planned barring downturn in health conditions

NASCAR is looking to return to fan-less driving in the short term. We break down the latest news around the Coca-Cola 600.

NASCAR is hoping to restart its season at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina on May 17th, and the following weekend we could have the annual Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte. North Carolina governor Roy Cooper told the media on Tuesday he thinks the race will happen without fans on Memorial Day weekend “unless health conditions go down.”

Cooper said Nascar submitted social distancing plans and North Carolina public officials are set to approve them with some suggested modifications. There is no word yet on how a pit crew will socially distance during the race. One has to imagine we’d see pre-race testing for the drivers and their crews, but NASCAR has not announced their plan as of yet.

Cooper said he anticipates the organizing body to announce their plans for Charlotte in the near future.

The NASCAR season was suspended following the March 8th FanShield 500. We’ve seen iRacing taking hold in recent weeks, with decent ratings on FS1.
