Calendar of when sports leagues will return in 2020

The coronavirus has resulted in an extensive shutdown of sports leagues around the globe. We’re tracking the timeline for leagues to return to action.

Virtually the entire sports world came to a halt in mid-March as the Covid-19 pandemic grew in scale around the globe. The NBA was the first major North American sports league to suspend its season, and was quickly followed by the NHL. Major League Baseball later suspended spring training and postponed Opening Day indefinitely.

The NFL and college football remain in their offseasons in the meantime. The NFL conducted its annual draft in late April, but has moved its offseason program to a virtual realm, and will not let teams return to facilities until all teams are eligible to do so.

Sports are slowly starting to return in some countries, but it will take some time for many leagues to get back on track. We’ll be using this space to provide the most recent update as to the status of each sports league and its intended return date. to track news and what it means for the return of various leagues.

Australian Football League

Play suspended through May 31st, with league targeting June 11th as a return to action.


Returned on May 16th. The season will play through the end of June with this updated schedule.

Chinese Basketball Association

Season suspended until at least July.

College football

There is no word yet on a potential delay to the start of the fall season. Conferences have meetings planned in late May, which could give us a better handle on the situation. In mid-April, conference commissioners told Vice President Mike Pence there would be no college football until campuses opened back up.

English Premier League

Restart scheduled for June 17th.

French Open

Roland-Garos announced it is rescheduling the French Open to September 20th, and the event will run through October 4th.

Horse Racing

Kentucky Derby: Churchill Downs announced it will reschedule the Derby to September 5th.
Preakness Stakes: Maryland governor announces race rescheduled for October 3rd.
Belmont Stakes: Rescheduled for June 20th.

Indianapolis 500

Rescheduled for August 23rd.

Indian Premier League cricket

Season suspended indefinitely with July the earliest for a potential return.

Korea Baseball Organization

Returned to full season action on May 6th.

La Liga

President of league announced league will restart on June 11th. First eight days schedule released.

Ligue 1 and 2

The French prime minister announced that sporting events will not return, even without fans, until at least September.


60-game schedule to start July 23rd.


“MLS Is Back” tournament to start July 8th.


Returned May 17th at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina, announced extended schedule.


Board of Governors approved 22-team playoff format. Final stretch of regular season will start July 30th.


The league has teams opening facilities and allowing coaches back for all but the San Francisco 49ers. The league is optimistic about having a full training camp, but has negotiations to conduct with the players.


24-team playoff to start on August 1st in Edmonton and Toronto with qualifying round.


Announced 9-team tournament to start June 27th.

National Rugby League

Announced May 28th restart with 20-round competition and grand final to be played on October 25.

PGA Tour

Announced June 11th restart date with the Charles Schwab Challenge at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Here is the fully restructured schedule for the 2020 season.

Summer Olympics

Rescheduled to July 23-August 8, 2021.

Serie A

Restarted on June 20th.


Wimbledon canceled.
French Open rescheduled to September 20-October 4.
US Open to be held on time starting August 31st.

Tour de France

The cycling race start date was rescheduled for August 29th, but that could be pushed back further due to the ban on mass events through the end of August.

UEFA Champions League

Tournament will restart on August 7th


UFC 249 took place on May 9th in Jacksonville and events remain on schedule moving forward.


Playing 22-game season, starting July 25th.
