Fantasy football impact of Detroit Lions signing UDFA TE Hunter Bryant

The Detroit Lions are improving their tight end depth by signing unrestricted free agent Hunter Bryant out of Washington. Bryant was considered to be one of the best at his position in the 2020 NFL Draft, but teams appear to have been too concerned about his knee health to select him.

Injuries hampered Bryant’s first two season at Washington. He only appeared in 14 games in his freshman and sophomore year combined. But he racked up 825 receiving yards in 2019, which ranked third in the country among tight ends.

Scouting Report

Hunt can make plays but might not fit into a traditional tight end role. He isn’t a great blocker but has great hands and speed to create separation from would-be tacklers after the catch. Some think he’s more fit to be split out wide than he is on the line of scrimmage.

He doesn’t have ideal size or determination as a blocker, but he has sticky hands with the acceleration to work past linebackers and threaten seams. He’s a straight-line mover who gets bogged down in and out of breaks. He has playmaking ability but needs linear routes that allow him to keep moving on all three levels. — NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein

Fantasy football impact

It’s hard to see where Bryant fits in with the Lions. Detroit still has 2019 first rounder T.J. Hockenson on the team and drafted Isaac Nauta this year in the seventh round. Then there’s Jesse James, who signed a four-year deal with Detroit last year. Bryant could be a TE3, but nothing more. He has little to no season-long fantasy sports appeal.
