When we look back on the 2020 NFL Draft, there will likely be numerous selections on day two and day three that turn into stars. However, with round two beginning in under 12 hours, players do not have quite the same name recognition. There’s great talent still available, but the “names” that the average NFL knows is limited.
Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts is one such name. He has been projected up and down the draft board on the second and third day, but the CFP semifinalist still brings more general name recognition to the proceedings than a lot of players. That’s not to knock the talent of the 223 other players who will be drafted on Thursday and Friday, but Hurts is a name casual fans will be specifically tracking to see where he goes in the draft.
Second round mock drafts are generally skipping over quarterbacks, but USA Today’s Draftwire has Hurts off the board at No. 44 overall, the 12th pick of the second round in their day 2 mock draft. The Indianapolis Colts currently hold that pick, and have Philip Rivers, Jacoby Brissett, and Chad Kelly on their roster. They are going all in with Rivers this year, but their long-term future at the position is uncertain. Brissett was solid enough, but the popular take is that the Colts will look for some competition in the QB room.
DraftKings Sportsbook is offering odds on which round Hurts will go in, and which team will pick Hurts. The second round is favored at -225, followed by round 3 at +140, round 4 at +1100, and rounds 5-7 at +3300. Among teams, the Colts lead the way at +300, followed by the Steelers at +600, then the Jaguars and Patriots at +700. All four teams make sense given their current quarterback situations.
But is there a sleeper in the bunch? The Falcons at +1400 could use someone to eventually replace Matt Ryan. The Raiders at +1600 seem like really good value considering Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota are their starters. An intriguing long shot might be the Vikings at +5000. Kirk Cousins signed an extension through 2022, but could be released after 2021 with considerable cap savings.
