UPDATE, April 28: The French Prime Minister announced a ban on all events where more than 5,000 people gather through at least the end of August. The Tour De France was hoping for an August 29th start date, so this could bump it back further.

The announcement led the national Ligue 1 and Ligue football leagues to cancel their seasons, as the Prime Minister specified that no event where more than 5,000 people gather would be allowed until at least September.

The 2020 Tour de France has officially been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Associated Press. French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that all public events with large crowds have been canceled until at least mid-July.

The Tour de France was scheduled to run from June 27 to July 19. Tour organizers said on Tuesday that Macron’s order makes it impossible to hold the race as scheduled, and so they are working with the International Cycling Union to figure out new dates. The AP said new dates could be announced by the end of April if discussions are productive between organizer Amaury Sport Organisation and the International Cycling Union.

Prior to cancellation, European sportsbooks had Egan Bernal installed as the favorite at 5/2. Chris Froome and Primoz Roglic were installed at 8/1, and Thibaut Pinot was installed at 9/1. Bernal won the Tour in 2019, finishing one minute 11 seconds ahead of teammate Geraint Thomas and one minute 31 seconds ahead of Steven Kruijswijk.
