Salaries, sleepers for League of Legends $555 DFS satellite contest featuring LPL, LCK

We take a look at player pricing and notable options for a League of Legends contest featuring Chinese and Korean leagues on the morning of April 11th. The winner advances to the Fantasy League of Legends Online Championship.

DraftKings is kicking off their Fantasy League of Legends Online Championship with a satellite tournament early in the morning on Saturday, April 11th. Satellite competitions will run regularly until the Championship, which is tentatively planned for late May or early June. There will be a $555 buy-in at that point, but you can use a satellite contest to gain entry. This is all part of the broader $100 million pool in DraftKings’ Championship Series.

The contest laaaaaate tonight features LPL and LCK teams in China and Korea. The entry fee is $34 and lineups are due by 2 a.m. ET. The winner of the contest claims a ticket to the League of Legends Championship contest. You can set your lineup here.

League of Legends DFS involves a roster of six players and a team unit fitting under a $50,000 salary cap. You select a captain that is priced higher than normal, but gets you 1.5 times the point total. Then, you fill out a six-player roster that includes the following positions (broken down in detail at DraftKings Playbook):

  • Top Laner
  • Jungler
  • Mid Laner
  • Attack Damage (AD) Carry
  • Support
  • Team

Scoring for players consists of kills (+3 points), assists (+2 points), deaths (-1 point), creep score (+0.02 points), and 10+ K/A Bonus (+2 pts for 10 kills or 10 assists in a single game). The team scoring includes turrets (+1), Dragons (+2), Barons (+3), First Blood (+2), a Win (+2), and a bonus for a win in under 30 minutes (+2). All points earn 1.5x if in the Captain slot.

Strategy to consider

If you’re new to esports, and particularly esports DFS, there are some broad strategy options to consider. With League of Legends, the losing team in a given matchup can easily find themselves with limited production when all is said and done. Look through matchups and consider teams facing decidedly inferior opponents. You can view current standings here.

An example to consider for this contest would be KT Gaming (KT) vs. SANDBOX Gaming (SB). KT is 9-7, and has been up and down this season, while SB is 5-11 and stumbling along. KT isn’t great, but they get a favorable matchup in this contest. If you’re looking for some moderate value, consider Kuro ($7,000) as a MID or Aiming as an ADC. Normally they aren’t the best value, but against a 5-11 team, there could be some upside.

Another strategy to consider is teams on a hot streak vs. teams on a losing streak. LoL is updated fairly regularly, and it can take even a good team some time to get on track with the changes. That can offer some value from even a poor team.

In this case, consider a potential upset candidate as Team WE (WE) takes on eStar (ES). Although WE is 6-5 and ES is 9-4, ES has lost three straight. They could get it turned around this week, but if you want to find some value, this is worth consideration. Whereas Cryin on ES tops the MID salary board at $8,200, Teacherama on WE is $6,800 and worth a look. Additionally, consider Jiumeng ($7,400) at ADC or Team WE ($4,400) as your team choice to save a few bucks for elsewhere on the roster.

Neither of these are foolproof strategies, but they are solid starting points if you want to dive into LoL DFS.
