The No. 1 seed Liberty Flames won their second-straight Atlantic Sun tournament championship with a 73-57 win over the Lipscomb Bisons on Sunday in Lynchburg, Virginia. Caleb Homesley was 7/13 from the floor with nine rebounds to lead the Flames back to their second-straight A-Sun title.
Despite today giving Liberty a gaudy 30-4 record this season, the Flames were likely not in the NCAA Tournament without a win today. Their strength of schedule was 345th in the country, and they still don’t have a Quadrant 1 win this season.
Lipscomb knocked off Liberty 77-71 in Nashville to finish the A-Sun regular season, but the Flames as the No. 1 seed were undefeated at home this season, and enter the NCAA’s with a 30-4 record. The Flames got by NJIT and Stetson by just four and six points in the quarterfinals and semifinals, but dominated the title game on both ends of the floor.
Liberty defeated Mississippi State in a 12/5 game 80-76 last season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Virginia Tech 67-58. They’ll head back to the NCAA Tournament looking to make the second weekend for the first time in program history.
