The XFL has made it through 40 percent of its inaugural season and Week 5 is upon us. Parity appears to be the rule for the XFL so far, as only two teams have one or fewer losses and no teams are winless. The Houston Roughnecks remain the cream of the crop with P.J. Walker behind center while the St. Louis BattleHawks come in second with Jordan Ta’amu leading the way.
Josh Johnson has been great since returning to the Wildcats in Week 2 from his thigh injury, but his team is 1-2 with him as the starter despite the highest QB Rating and most yards per attempt in the league. Those losses aren’t on Johnson and feel somewhat unlucky, but injuries to Nelson Spruce and Martez Carter haven’t helped either. This week he returns home to face a Vipers defense that was scorched by P.J. Walker for 300 yards and three touchdowns, but has held down Cardale Jones, Matt McGloin and Brandon Silvers. Johnson is much closer in ability to Walker than the others.
Ta’amu grades out in PFF system as the top quarterback in the league and last week we saw him at his best against the Guardians. He needs games to be close for him to reach his upside. He still isn’t throwing the ball deep, but as long as he’s asked to move the ball, he’s been good at doing so and that shouldn’t change against the Defenders this week. ‘
I am assuming Luis Perez will start in place of Matt McGloin, as he looked good last week where as McGloin has yet to look good any week. I do think we might again see Brandon Silvers over B.J. Daniels, but if Daniels does get the nod, his rushing ability should help him become a decent fantasy play this week.
