The NCAA Tournament is a few weeks away, which means it’s conference tournament time, setting the table for March Madness. We’ll be taking a look at some of the best teams in each conference, and providing picks and predictions each conference tournament. Plenty of favorites will win, but we’ve got some sleepers to consider that might be able to pull off a big upset on the way to the NCAA Tournament.
Here’s the bracket for the Southern Conference Tournament with TV listings, dates and times.
The Southern Conference has a chance to be a two-bid league depending on what happens in the conference tournament. East Tennessee State is a bubble team, but if they can’t get the job done, they have a resume worthy of consideration as an at-large squad into the NCAA Tournament. The Buccaneers are currently listed as a 12 seed on most Bracketology sites.
Favorite: East Tennessee State
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers are the hottest team in the Southern Conference right now, riding a nine-game winning streak and clinching the tournament’s top seed with one regular season game remaining. The Buccaneers have a 27-4 overall record and are 16-2 in the SoCon. ETSU will have a target on its back in Asheville, North Carolina.
Sleeper: UNC Greensboro
The UNC Greensboro Spartans will likely enter the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed, but teams that can do well away from home typically succeed in postseason tournament play. UNC Greensboro is coming is 11-3 in road games, showing the Spartans are comfortable playing outside their home court. It’s a huge edge going into the neutral floors of March.
Dark Horse: Mercer
The Southern Conference tournament appears to be a three-team race between East Tennessee State, Furman and UNC Greensboro but if you had to take a flyer on somebody, try the Mercer Bears. They are the No. 4 seed conference tournament and on a four-game winning streak as they head to Asheville. This program pulled off bigger upsets in the past, like when Mercer beat Duke in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Never forget.
