Nine days ago, we learned the Dallas Cowboys were bringing back Kai Forbath as their kicker. Now, they’ve brought in significant competition. The team is signing free agent Greg Zuerlein to a three-year deal, according to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo.
The move is surprising in light of the Forbath signing, but it could just be that the team signed Forbath to ensure they had somebody. Now that they know they have Zuerlein for $7.5 million in guaranteed money, I suspect we see Dallas release Forbath before too long.
Also, our friends at Blogging The Boys offered some thoughts on the timeline that might have led to this signing. It makes sense, and helps explain what would otherwise be an odd sequence of events.
Last season, Zuerlein ranked ninth in total fantasy points for a Rams offense that took a step backward. Zuerlein joins a Cowboys offense that is bringing back most of its key offensive weapons, which bodes well for Zuerlein’s fantasy value. At the same time, it’s worth noting that in four games last season, Forbath led all kickers in fantasy points per game. He played one game with the New England Patriots and then three with the Cowboys. In that time, he converted all ten of his field goal attempts and 11 of 12 extra points. Forbath will end up somewhere, and retains solid fantasy value once that happens.
