Early this morning, the Australian Football League season got started with a win for the Richmond Tigers 16.9 (105) over 12.9 (81) for the Carlton Blues. But now that last year’s champion has been feted, we can continue with the season and some Friday Night Football. Both matches early Friday morning are Western Australia vs. Victoria, and we’ll have one-third of Week 1 action in the books after Friday’s play.

Here are the current odds and bet splits for the opening Friday of the AFL season from DraftKings Sportsbook:

AFL 3/20 - Collingwood vs Western

Collingwood Magpies (-1.5, -106) 58% of handle, 70% of bets
Western Bulldogs (+1.5, -118) 42% of handle, 30% of bets

Collingwood is considered a contender for the title in 2020, having fallen in the AFL semifinals in 2019. Captain Scott Pendlebury was just cleared of coronavirus, and Brodie Grundy is back as the club’s leading impact player.

Western returns after a season that saw them lose in the Grand Final to Richmond. They’re tipped to make it back to the top eight once again.

Fremantle Dockers (+14.5) 53% of handle, 59% of bets
Essendon Bombers (-14.5) 47% of handle, 41% of bets

Fremantle limped to a 9-13 record and a missed the final eight, and are in rebuilding mode after having three top-10 picks in last year’s draft. The Dockers Nat Fyfe is one of the best players in the AFL.

While Essendon have failed to lift the trophy since 2004, and fans are getting a bit anxious. Following a major doping scandal in the earliest part of the decade. They made the playoffs for the second time in three years last season, but were wiped out in the 1v8 match against the West Coast Eagles in a 55-point loss.
