AFC East odds for Patriots, Bills, Jets, Dolphins with Tom Brady leaving

The New England Patriots have won the AFC East for 11 straight seasons, but that streak could be in jeopardy in 2020. Tom Brady announced Tuesday that he plans on parting ways with New England, and that means the rest of the field has a better chance at winning a division title for the first time since the Miami Dolphins did in 2008. We break down how Brady’s decision to leave the Patriots affected the AFC East title odds at DraftKings Sportsbook.

New England Patriots (+100)

The Patriots were favored (-278) to win the division for a 12th straight time before Brady said he was exploring his options. New England’s odds dropped to -110 after he made it clear that he intended on leaving, and sit at even money as of this article publishing. The team didn’t have an elite receiver or dominant tight end in 2019, and Brady is the straw that could break the camel’s back. They remain favorites given Bill Belichick’s history, but plenty could change depending on how they address the quarterback position. The odds could change if the Patriots secure the talents of a suitable replacement, but right now Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer will be competing atop the depth chart.

Buffalo Bills (+160)

Buffalo finished second in the AFC East last season with a 10-6 record and clocked in at +325 before Brady’s announcement. In the aftermath, the Bills climbed to +150 and now sit at +160. They seem like the only legitimate threat to dethrone New England at this point. Josh Allen is improving, the receiving corps has been bolstered by the addition of Stefon Diggs, and Buffalo’s defense was one of the best units in the NFL last season.

New York Jets (+750)

The Jets saw their odds jump from +1200 to +900 and now sit at +750. Sam Darnold has yet to play a complete season though, and Le’Veon Bell could improve after getting back in the flow of, you know, playing football regularly. New York still has to bring in some pass catchers to compete though, as Robby Anderson will be headed at the door if he doesn’t receive a worthwhile offer as an unrestricted free agent.

Miami Dolphins (+900)

The Dolphins are long shots, but still improved from +1600 to +900. They have too many holes to fill to be considered serious contenders though. Miami needs talent at running back, quarterback, on the offensive line, and all over the secondary on the defensive side of the ball. The Dolphins do have 14 picks in the 2020 NFL Draft to fill out their roster with youth, but don’t expect them to make much noise.
