The No. 3 seed Boston University Terriers knocked off the defending Patriot League champions Thursday, as they defeated the No. 1 Colgate Raiders 64-61 Wednesday in the title game on Colgate’s campus. Max Mahoney led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting. He also tallied 10 rebounds and four assists, helping BU reach its first NCAA tournament since 2011.
Colgate was led by junior point guard Jordan Burns, who led the team with 15.7 points per game during the regular season and poured in a game-high 21 points. While the Raiders won’t go to the big show, they’re a lock for the NIT as Patriot League champs. It’s not quite what the Raiders wanted, but at least their season isn’t over just yet.
The Raiders entered the game as 6.5-point favorite to claim its second straight league title. The over/under on total points was set at 140.5, but this game was no barn burner as neither side could get out on the break, so the offensive production fell well short of what was expected.
