Bong Joon-Ho’s work as the director of Parasite earned him the overwhelming amount of praise before the 2020 Oscars, but he was still an underdog going into the awards ceremony behind Sam Mendes and 1917. But in the biggest surprise of the night so far, Joon-Ho wins Best Director at the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday night in Hollywood.
Mendes was a bigger favorite for directing than his movie was for Best Picture, as he had odds of -278 before the ceremony, with 28% of the action wagered at DraftKings Sportsbook as of this morning. His odds moved furiously in the lead up to Sunday night, opening at -133, then getting all the way down to -1250 on February 3rd.
But less that one week later, Bong Joon-Ho cashes all the tickets while being priced at +250 when the ceremony began.
Mendes previously won for American Beauty in 2000, but what a night for an international film in subtitles.
