The Afternoon Line February 28: Washington State vs. Washington, Davidson vs. Dayton

Tonight Obi Toppin of the Flyers gets another chance to make his case for the Wooden Award as the best player in college basketball

Obi Toppin might be the best player in college basketball, but playing for a team in the Atlantic 10 makes it tough for him to get the shine and PR in the national consciousness because of the lack of challenge in their schedule as well as poor tv times.

But that isn’t the case tonight, as Toppin and the Dayton Flyers host the Davidson Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The 6’9 big man has an eFG of 66.3% while averaging 19.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He’s a special player and a future lottery pick, and he’s worth the price of admission if you haven’t seen him or his team play yet. Right now Dayton is solidly on the two-line in the NCAA Tournament, having won 17 in a row while being undefeated in conference play.

Right now, Davidson is catching 10.5 points, with 78% of the bets and 60% of the handle on the visitors. The total of 140.5 is getting 80% of the bets but only 56% of the cash.

Also tonight the Yale Bulldogs look to stay atop the Ivy League as they host the Penn Quakers. A pair of wins this weekend against Penn and Princeton will sew up a spot in the Ivy League tournament for the Yalies, led by junior guard Azar Swain. There’s a slim chance a Yale team that runs out could sneak their way into the NCAA Tournament with an NET of 61, but it’s unlikely with the low-hanging fruit of an Ivy League schedule. Their two-point loss to Penn State in December has proved a killer.

Also tonight, Washington State heads to in-state rival Washington, who are 9.5 point favorites. The status of Isaac Bonton seems to be probable, but the sharp action is still with the Huskies. Only 16% of the bets but 72% of the dollars are on Washington.
