Yankees, Mets top World Series betting prior to Luis Severino injury

We break down where the action is on 2020 World Series odds.

Major League Baseball is back at spring training, but the roller-coaster news cycle just keeps on chugging along. The offseason saw the Houston Astros busted for a sign-stealing scheme (resulting in firings around the league) and the Boston Red Sox trade away Mookie Betts and David Price. Both resulted in significant moves among various odds, but the news has not stopped.

Tuesday brought big news for the New York Yankees. The team shut down starting pitcher Luis Severino due to arm soreness, and two doctors have recommended he get Tommy John surgery. Severino has accepted the diagnoses and will return some time in 2021. He’s not the top of the Yankees’ rotation, but he was going to be a significant contributor.

It’s not surprising the Yankees odds took a hit at DraftKings Sportsbook. They slipped from +350 before the injury to +400 after the injury. That coupled with the Los Angeles Dodgers additions of Betts and Price has LA a +375 favorite to win the World Series.

Prior to the Severino news, the heavy action at DK Sportsbook had been on the Yankees. As of Monday morning 57 percent of the World Series betting handle and 45 percent of total bets were on the Yankees. The New York Mets were the next closest at eight percent and five percent, respectively. Considering DK does so much business in New Jersey, it’s not surprising to see so much action on the New York teams. The Dodgers followed them with four percent of handle and seven percent of bets.

There are a couple notable long shots getting bet a decent amount. The +2800 Cincinnati Reds had been getting three percent of handle and four percent of bets, while the +3500 Chicago White Sox were at three percent each.
