The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the 2020 Super Bowl to secure the Lombardi Trophy. They came back from a 20-10 deficit with a 21-point fourth quarter, and it’s fitting that their franchise quarterback earned MVP honors. Patrick Mahomes started slow, but earned the honors with a big fourth quarter.
Mahomes finished the game with 286 yards, throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions, and rushing for a touchdown. It wasn’t pretty at times, but once again, Mahomes stepped up in a big way.
It is not surprising Mahomes won the award. The quarterback wins the award much of the time, and Mahomes has been a key cog throughout. He was the heavy favorite the past two weeks, sitting at +115 throughout the bye week.
Damien Williams was likely in the discussion to some extent, finishing the game with 104 yards and a rushing touchdown, and four receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown. It was a great game, but it was always going to be a tough hill to climb with Mahomes also on the field.
