Breaking down Cardale Jones, Matt McGloin performances in Week 2 of the XFL

We break down the performances of Cardale Jones and Matt McGloin in the Week 2 Defenders-Guardians matchup.

Fourth quarter update: McGloin was benched in the fourth quarter and replaced by Marquise Williams. McGloin finished the game 8-of-19 for 44 yards and two interceptions, while Williams completed four of eight passes for 51 yards. Jones finished the game with a bang, completing 62 percent of his passes for 276 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Third quarter update: Things have not gotten better for McGloin in the second half. He completed 3-of-5 passes, but it was only for 12 yards and one of his incomplete passes was picked off and run back for a score. Meanwhile, Jones had a relatively quiet third quarter as the Defenders look to run down the clock. Jones threw for five yards and an interception on a pass deflected off his own receiver. DC leads 18-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

Halftime update: Jones capitalized on the excellent field position his defense gave him on his second drive and came away with a field goal. He marched into enemy territory to secure another field goal before the break, putting his team on top 12-0. He’s thrown for 155 yards and didn’t manage to get any rushing yards in the second quarter. New York’s second turnover of the contest came on a McGloin interception in the second quarter. He totaled an abysmal 32 passing yards on on 5-of-14 throwing. The Guardians haven’t been able to get on the board yet.

A matchup between the DC Defenders and New York Guardians are opening up Week 2 of the XFL, and both sides are looking to build on 1-0 records. The Defenders’ Cardale Jones had one of the better quarterback performances in Week 1 is continuing to assert himself as one of the XFL’s elite. Matt McGloin didn’t post gaudy numbers in his XFL debut, but ran for a score and threw a touchdown pass in the Guardians’ blowout victory last weekend. We’re tracking the performances of both quarterbacks here.

Jones led a strong opening drive for DC that ended with a touchdown pass to DeAndre Thompkins. That put the Defenders up 6-0 heading into the second quarter. He completed four of his five throws and tallied 68 yards through the air, and added a 14-yard scramble.

McGloin didn’t get much action in the first quarter. He was 2-of-5 passing for 40 yards on his first drive before Darius Victor fumbled the ball after hauling in a screen pass.
