Friday PM update: Gibson is officially out, per J.P. Finlay. Peyton Barber will get early down and goal-line work while J.D. McKissic will see receiving work while also splitting carries with Barber depending on game script.
Friday update: Gibson didn’t practice Friday, per John Keim. He will not play this Sunday, but we’ll need to get the final injury report to make it official.
Thursday update: Gibson is once again not at practice, per Nick Jhabvala. He is more than likely out this week with turf toe, giving Peyton Barber and J.D. McKissic the work against the 49ers.
The Washington Football Team will likely be without their starting running back Antonio Gibson when they take on the San Francisco 49ers this week, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Gibson was forced from Monday’s game against the Pittsburg Steelers with a toe injury and couldn’t return. He reportedly suffered a turf toe injury, which besides being extremely painful, usually keeps players out multiple games depending on the severity.
The team might not rule Gibson out immediately, but it would seem his chances of playing are slim, as Rapoport says his “status is in doubt.” Gibson has put together a strong rookie season, seeing the bulk of the running back rushing attempts after carrying the ball just 33 times while at Memphis.
On the season, Gibson has run the ball 141 times for 659 yards (4.7 ypc) and 11 touchdowns, while catching 32 passes for 233 yards. Gibson was seen more as a pass-catcher coming out of college, but his transition to NFL pass protection has limited his passing down snaps. That’s where J.D, McKissic comes in. Peyton Barber will handle many of the between-the-tackles work, but McKissic and is likely to see a boost in rushing attempts and targets with Gibson on the shelf.
