Floyd Mayweather announced on Instagram over the weekend that he will be fighting Logan Paul in an exhibition fight on February 20th. It’s not entirely clear why this is happening — other than money — but it would appear to in fact be happening.
There will be plenty of people who watch these for the sideshow nature of it, and we won’t judge too harshly. If you think you will in fact eventually buy this PPV, there is a chance to save some money on it by purchasing sooner than later.
The PPV will air on something called Fanmio, which is a service claims it wants “to create the best fan experiences accessible to everyone around the globe.” I don’t know if Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul fighting qualifies as such, but who am I to judge?
Fanmio is offering a tiered pricing model that incentivizes purchasing early.
- Opening price now: $24.99
- After one million PPVs are sold, the price goes to $39.99
- Starting Dec. 29, the price goes to $59.99
- Starting Feb. 11, the price is $69.99
If you know you’ll end up paying to watch this fight, it makes sense to buy it now at $25, rather than the night of the fight for $70. The only reason not to is if you think this whole thing is a sham and you might have to fight to get your money back when it gets canceled. But if you think this is on the up-and-up, you might as well make your purchase now.
If this fight doesn’t happen, more than likely this just ends up being a no-interest loan to Fanmio that collects some interest in the bank. But the pricing model allows Fanmio and the two fighters to see how interest develops.
The exhibition fight between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. reportedly brought in 1.2 million PPV buys. I’m skeptical this event reaches a million buys by December 29th, so we could see the price jump from $25 to $60 at that point. The fight itself is ridiculous, but if you’re actually going to pay to watch this, I suppose you might as well spend as little money as possible.
