Championship Weekend will feature a few rematches from college football’s regular season, but none of them will be as highly anticipated as the ACC title game between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Clemson Tigers. Back on Nov. 7 Notre Dame got the best of Clemson at home in two overtimes, though the Tigers were without Trevor Lawrence at quarterback as he had tested positive for the coronavirus.
Now he’s back, and Clemson needs to keep its championship dreams alive.
Opening odds
Point Spread: Clemson (-7.5) vs. Notre Dame
Moneyline: Clemson: -350 Notre Dame: +260
How they got here
This conference thing isn’t too hard apparently because Notre Dame wasn’t an independent this season for the first time ever, and went 10-0 overall including 9-0 in ACC play. Ian Book made a huge progression this season and became the program’s leader in victories, and ND’s defense is a strength. Clemson went 9-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play with the lone blemish coming to the Irish. The Tigers are solid on both sides of the ball, and actually rank ahead of Notre Dame in yards per play offensively and defensively heading into this game.
Bowl implications
The winner of this game is undoubtedly going to be a part of the College Football Playoff. It might be difficult to make a case for Clemson if it loses, but a loss for Notre Dame would create quite a discussion when it’s time to select the top four. If either team is left out of the CFP, it will be a no brainer for a New Year’s Six bowl.
