How and what to watch for Baylor vs. No. 13 Oklahoma

The No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners have plenty at stake Saturday when they host the 2-5 Baylor Bears.

The Sooners remain in control of their Big 12 Championship destiny. If they win out, they will take home the conference title, the program’s fourth consecutive under head coach Lincoln Riley. Few coaches have dominated a conference as thoroughly as Riley has since taking over for Bob Stoops in 2017, putting him in rare company in the recent history of the sport.

However, that outlook comes with some hard caveats. Already, COVID-19 postponements have forced the program into a corner. After a tilt with West Virginia moved to Dec. 12, the Sooners have no open dates remaining this year. That means any further issues would lead to a cancellation, putting any title hopes in jeopardy.

Assuming Saturday’s game goes off without a hitch, it will feature a showdown of Riley and Baylor head coach Dave Aranda. A season ago as the defensive coordinator of the LSU Tigers, Aranda dismantled the high-powered Sooners offense in the College Football Playoff semifinals, leading to a 63-28 victory for the eventual champions. Riley has the opportunity to return serve, especially with Oklahoma’s offense humming with freshman Spencer Rattler behind center.

While Baylor has largely struggled this season, Aranda just guided the program to an upset over the Kansas State Wildcats last week. Even if Aranda still doesn’t possess the horses to run his defense, he could still find a way to give Oklahoma trouble and make the game more competitive than it appears.
