How and what to watch for Florida Atlantic vs. Georgia Southern

A late season C-USA vs. Sun Belt showdown is set to take place on Saturday as the Florida Atlantic Owls will fly up the coast to Statesboro to meet the Georgia Southern Eagles.

Prior to last week’s game against Middle Tennessee State being canceled due to COVID-19 precautions, FAU was last seen handling their business against a hapless UMass squad for a 24-2 victory. Freshman quarterback Javion Posey continued to show his promise, throwing for 203 yards and rushing for 90 plus a touchdown in the win.

Head coach Willie Taggart and staff hope that he can continue to improve and provide a lift for an Owl passing game that’s been lacking in accuracy throughout 2020. FAU quarterbacks are only completing 53.3 percent of their passes this year.

Speaking of teams trying to shake things up on offense late in the season, Georgia Southern fired offensive coordinator Bob DeBesse after the Eagles fell to in-state conference rival Georgia State 30-24 last Saturday. Southern’s final three drives ended with a missed field goal, a fumble and an interception, giving the Panthers the cover to post 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to steal the win.

Three of Georgia Southern’s four losses in 2020 have come by only one score.
