What to do with David Montgomery in Week 13 fantasy football

We go over the fantasy football outlook of David Montgomery ahead of the Bears Week 13 matchup against the Lions.

Game day update: ESPN projects Montgomery with 16.5 points in PPR leagues. He faces a Lions defense that ranks dead last in fantasy points allowed to running backs, so this is very much a must-start for Montgomery.

The Chicago Bears have been one of the most confusing teams in the league this year. Their inconsistency at the quarterback position and inability to win its last five games has taken its toll on fantasy plays outside of receiver Allen Robinson. Even coming off of a season-best 25.3 fantasy performance, is David Montgomery worth a play this week?

Fantasy Football analysis: Bears RB David Montgomery

Montgomery went on to rush for over 100 yards in last week’s 41-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers, surpassing the century-mark for the fifth time of his two-year career and the first time this season. A 57-yard run on his first attempt of the game in the first quarter was the highlight of Montgomery’s 11-rush, 104-yard performance on the ground. Besides that, he had seven attempts that went for four yards or fewer.

Where you can count on Montgomery to salvage some fantasy points, is in the passing game. He scored just his second touchdown of the season last week as well, with a three-yard reception in garbage time. His 40 receiving yards in the second-most this season, as Montgomery has had five or more targets in seven of his 10 games played this year.

The Detroit Lions are the second-worst team in the league defensively, giving up 29.8 points per-game. Maybe that’s part of the reason they fired Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn? Not sure. Regardless, the Lions have been better recently against the run compared to early on in the season. They’ve allowed 89 rushing yards or less in two of the last three games, but running backs have found success close to the goal line, scoring on four runs and one reception, all within the five. For Montgomery to be successful, the Bears have to utilize him as a pass catcher in situations of 10 yards or less, just as he was on his touchdown last week.

In Montgomery’s Week 1 matchup against the Lions, he ran for 64 yards on 13 carries and had a reception on three targets. At that point, he was splitting carries with Tarik Cohen, who’s out for the year with a torn ACL, so it’s likely he’ll see more work in this contest.
