49ers place K Robbie Gould on COVID-19 injured reserve list

The 49ers will need a new kicker for Week 17 against the Seattle Seahawks.

UPDATE: The 49ers are adding kicker Tristan Vizcaino off the Minnesota Vikings practice squad, per Nick Wagoner. He’ll handle kicking duties on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers have placed kicker Robbie Gould on the COVID-19 injured reserve list, and he is not expected to be available for Sunday’s game. Even if he is a high-risk, close contact and did not test positive, he has to remain on the list a minimum of ten days. That would carry beyond Sunday’s season finale against the Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers would likely use punter Mitch Wishnowsky as their kicker on Sunday. He already handles kickoffs for the team, and while a field goal is different, he has enough of the basic mechanics to handle the job.

Wishnowsky has not attempted field goals in a game, but he does serve as the holder. This creates a bit of a complication, although I’d imagine one of the quarterbacks will get plenty of practice handling holding duties this week.
