The 2020-21 NBA season is underway and players are beginning to establish themselves as Most Valuable Player candidates. The race for MVP is wide open and we’ve identified a pair of candidates on DraftKings Sportsbook who are on the rise and another who are off to slow starts.
Kevin Durant, Brooklyn Nets (+800)
Everyone loves a comeback story and none are more appealing than KD’s this season. Brooklyn has secured two blowouts and Durant’s effortless scoring has been a big part of both wins. His superstar teammate Kyrie Irving could limit his upside, but the 2014 MVP will only gain steam as he gets back into basketball shape.
Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets (+2500)
Jokic hasn’t missed a step this year and is averaging 26.5 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists per game. He missed recording his second double-double of the season by one assist and his impact has been highlighted even more while Jamal Murray has struggled to hit his stride. Imagine a center averaging a triple-double and leading the league in assists. I’m not saying it’s likely, but no other big has looked as impressive as Jokic so far in my opinion.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks (+450)
It’s hard to keep maintain the level of excellence it takes to win two straight MVP awards and Antetokounmpo is doing just that. The reigning champ has looked very sluggish on the offensive end and hasn’t popped as a dominant defensive player either. He entered Sunday shooting 42.5 percent from the field and 56.5 percent from the charity stripe. I’m sure dominant games are on the way but there’s a large list of players performing at a higher level than Antetokounmpo.
Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors (+1600)
The Warriors have been blown out twice in what’s supposed to be Curry’s resurgent year after missing most of last season with a broken hand. We haven’t seen Golden State at full strength with Draymond Green but Curry’s offensive production is worth worrying about. He’s missing open shots he’s always made and it’s safe to say his MVP odds chances aren’t strong if he’s with a team that misses the playoffs
