How they got here
Northwestern went from last place in the Big Ten West in 2019 to first place this season and competed in the conference championship against Ohio State for the second time in three seasons. The Wildcats had their chances to pull off the upset but fell short. Northwestern heads into this game with a 6-2 record.
As for Auburn, it finally happened. Gus Malzahn was probably on the hot seat decades before he got the head coaching job, but he was finally fired after the season finale. The Tigers finished the season 6-4 and have since hired Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin to take over, though defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is likely the head coach for the bowl game.
