Report: Auburn to hire Boise State’s Bryan Harsin as next head coach

Auburn appears to have finally found their next head coach.

The Auburn Tigers are closing in on hiring Boise State’s Bryan Harsin as their next head coach, according to reporter Pete Thamel. The news comes following their decision to fire Gus Malzahn after eight seasons at the helm.

Harsin would leave the Broncos with a 69-19 record and three bowl victories in five appearances. The team won the Fiesta Bowl in his first year but has been relegated to pre-New Years Day bowl games in the ensuing seasons. The university elected to not participate in a bowl game this season.

The news that Harsin is leaving Boise State is not a surprise. He has had concerns about support from the university and the Mountain West Conference. Emails revealed discussions about a potential move to the American Athletic Conference, according to the Idaho Press.

Auburn’s search has been problematic at times and the school has struggled to find a decent replacement option. Billy Napier and Bill Clark were among a group of coaches to withdraw their names from consideration, and then there were rumors of the school reaching to Hugh Freeze. It hasn’t been pretty, but it would appear Auburn finally has their next head coach.
