McVay: Cam Akers out for Week 16 with ankle injury

The Rams will be without their starting running back in a big matchup with NFC West rival Seattle.

Los Angeles Rams rookie running back Cam Akers has a high-ankle sprain and won’t be able to play in Week 16, per The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue. Akers sprained his ankle against the Jets last week, but had it taped up and continued to play. He even broke off some long runs late in the game, which is pretty amazing considering he had a high-ankle sprain.

With Akers not playing a full complement of downs on Sunday, Malcolm Brown ended up seeing more work than Darrell Henderson, but there’s a good chance that was due to the Rams trailing, as Brown is getting work on passing downs. In a game where Akers is out from the start, Henderson would likely get the early-down role.

Akers had finally won the starting job before this injury and had been playing great. It's too bad that he’s likely done for the rest of the regular season, but if the Rams can get into the playoffs, which they should, he would have a shot at returning.
